Gregorio
the Great
Gregorio is also
known as the 'Orc Slayer', a title
previously held only by King Louen
Leoncouer himself. Heralding from
Gisoreux, Gregorio is the eldest son of
Sir William de Oliphant and Lady Margarit.
His two younger brothers (both of whom
through acts of courage are now Knights
of Bretonnia) are Hyden and Dyrien.
Gregorio is the eldest son by five years.
Gregorio entered
the Bretonnian army at the request of his
father, a Bretonnian Grail Knight who had
served King Charlen in the last of the
Errantry Wars. Severe wounds in the
Battle of Grey, almost forced him to
relinquish his sword but his guile and
battle skills have made him one of the
great tacticians of Bretonnian warfare
and to this day he still rides into
battle with Gregorio as an advisor.

As an Errant Knight Gregorio de Oliphant
always possessed leadership qualities.
His quick mind coupled with his
courageous demeanour and skill with the
sword, saw him quickly move through the
ranks to become an Errant Knight Champion
of Gisoreux.
Gregorio took as his regiment, a unit of
six young Errant Knights, three of whom
were his closest friends - Lord Rhyon,
Edwyn of Parravon and Ferdinand de Rocas
along with his father Sir William of
Gisoreux and his two brothers Dyrien
"the Dragonslayer" de Oliphant
and Hyden "the Heroic" de
Oliphant. Along with these knights
Gregorio's unit consisted of ten squires
with longbows (now known as the Redheads)
and ten archers (now known as the
Bretonnian Royal Archers of Gregorio, or
BRAGS). |

Bretonnian
Hero |
Gregorio and his
Errant regiment were assigned to
protect an area of land regarded
by the King himself as the most
fertile of sovereign soil, ready
for crops to be planted to feed
the castle at Gisoreux. This land
lay outsdide Gisoreux towards the
Forests of Arden and was
regularly threatened by Orcs.
Before long almost all natural
enemies were now fearful of
encroaching on this land.
However, dragons posed an
entirely different threat
altogether. When the Castle at
Gisoreux became inundated with
rumours of a great dragon taking
residence in a narrow pass at the
foot of the Pale Sisters, the
mood within the province became
very uneasy.
This pass was a trade route for
Gisoreux with Marienburg and a
dragon would pose a huge threat
to the safety of both Castles and
also to the trade between the two.
And so, Gregorio and his Errant
regiment were assigned to find
and slay this heinous creature (much
to the delight of Dyrien "the
Dragonslayer").
Little did Gregorio know that the
information was false and it was
in fact an ploy by the Orcs to
lure Gregorio into an ambush. In
a narrow stretch of the notorious
mountain access route to
Marienburg, Gregorio sensed
tension in the air and summoned
his Knightly intuition to
assertain the situation.
He ordered his fellow Errant
Knights into lance formation, his
archers to feather their arrows
and for his squires to be ready
to skirmish at a moments notice.
This was to be the moment of
truth for the young Errant Knight
Gregorio and his loyal brigade.
|
Then it happened. An
arrow appeared from above to
commence the battle. Orcs
appeared from everywhere and the
ambush had been sprung.
Hopelessly outnumbered by a
margin of more than ten to one (legend
has that figure at more than
fifty to one) Gregorio ordered
his battalion to hold fast, be
strong and to repledge their
allegience to the King and to the
Lady of the Lake. The Orcs were
relentless and kept on coming,
wave after wave. Gregorio and his
courageous knights held firm,
repelling the Orcs as one until,
sensing an opportunity, Gregorio
called for the Lance charge. The
Bretonnian's heroicly drove
repeatedly into the Orc army,
cutting a swaith through the ugly
little creatures each and every
time. Panic set in quickly in the
Orc camp as the narrow pass made
it impossible for them to charge
the flanks of the lance
formation; the battle had turned.
Gregorio's personal
tally of Orc scaps exceeded
thirty that day, along with the
defeat at his own hands of an
entire unit of Black Orcs, two
units of Goblin Wolf Riders and
the unknown rebel Savage Orc
Warboss and his boar. Thus
Gregorio has earned every right
to be regarded as the 'Orc
Slayer'.
Despite suffering
hurrendous wounds, the unit made
it back to Gisoreux. But there
were casualties. Ferdinand de
Rocas, three archers and five
squires all lost their lives that
day, while Sir William of
Gisoreux and Lord Rhyon both took
near fatal wounds. Their recovery
was extremely slow and Lord Rhyon
still walks with a limp after
tendons in his right leg were cut
during the battle.
|
Months later,
Gregorio de Oliphant defeated the
Black Knight at the Grande
Tourney at Couronne, to win the
favour of the King's daughter.
Then Gregorio proved his skill in
hand to hand combat, by defeating
the Green Knight to win his Grail
Quest. Since then, Gregorio has
gained favour in many more
battles, being finally rewarded
by King Louen Leoncouer and thus
being enshrined in Bretonnian
history.
Amidst the pomp and pagentry of
this special occaision which
united the kingdoms of Bretonnia,
Gregorio de Oliphant was Knighted
a Bretonnian Hero and he was
given full command over the
Bretonnian Armed Forces. The
other members of that original
battalion were honoured in this
ceremony as well;
> Lord Rhyon - Special Hero (General
of the Armed Forces in the
abscence of Gregorio)
> Sir Edwyn of Parravon -
Questing Knight (foot) Hero (commands
the Men At Arms infantry)
> Sir William of Gisoreux -
Questing Knight Hero (mounted)
> Dyrien "the
Dragonslayer" de Oliphant -
Grail Knight (mounted)
> Hyden "the Heroic"
de Oliphant - Knight of the Realm
(mounted)
Gregorio's famous Warhorse was
killed in his last battle, so in
recognition of his new Hero
status within the Kingdom, the
Royal Pegasus was enlisted to his
command, for use as his battle
mount. Gregorio is the complete
Bretonnian Hero; virtuous,
tactical, courageous, noble,
formidable yet compassionate and
above all, gallant. All hail
Gregorio "the Great" de
Oliphant - General of Bretonnia!

Gregorio's
Bretonnian Quest |
>> King
Louen Leoncouer has commissioned General
Gregorio de Oliphant to the Forest of
Arden, where he must repel all enemies
and protect the great cities of Couronne,
Marienburg, L'Anguille, Moussillon and
Gisoreux. This is an enormous territory
for Gregorio to cover, so the King has
granted him full empowerment over the
Bretonnian Army and has implemented a
national service order where young
squires are to be trained as Errant
Knights to bolster the ranks of this the
most noble of armies.
Many vile creatures, huge monsters,
Dragons and savage beasts linger and
breed in the Forest of Arden and so it
attracts many Knights Errant and Questing
Knights eager to hunt them down, slay
them and thereby win honour. Some of
these Knights never return. The remains
of others are sometimes found years
later, their rusting armour and bones
scattered around the lair of some hideous
beast, or glimpsed through the waters of
a misty mere.
Gregorio de Oliphant and his army are on
a quest therefore, to rid Bretonnia of
all things evil - be it in the Forest of
Arden or anywhere in this fine land - and
thus maintain a harmonious and tranquil
kingdom, where all Bretonnians can live
in peace.
